My guess is that they waited until the last minute to put on the heavy armor. It's horribly inflexible and not the kind of thing you'd want to walk around in, until you really HAD to. Certainly can't say for sure, but I'd probably defer to the early reports and think they DID have a lot of protection. Doug Bill,
